it should be long and your natural hair color, although dirty blond (both the color and the state of cleanliness) is very hippie. the center part as well. not many layers, just one, and maybe very long bangs at around your chin or jaw area.
but really, it's all about the accessories with hippie hair. have you ever heard of the song "san francisco (wear flowers in your hair)"? hippies actually wore flowers in their hair back in the day. also, pocahontas headbands were very popular. those are the cloth headbands that go straight across your forehead, as opposed to on your hair.
and about styling it, don't. it should look very natural and a little dirty, like you've just rolled out of bed. or more appropriately, like you've just rolled off a bamboo sleeping mat in the middle of the haight-ashbury district. maybe tuck your hair under one of your ears, and you're all set.
